Empress Carolina Augusta

Created: 1816-1818

Material, technology: oil, canvas

Size: 68.7 x 55.6 cm

Description: The painting has to engraved copies: by Blasius Höfel and Friedrich John; their signatures have preserved the name of the painter Joseph Stieler who worked in the Munich court. As Höfel’s dated print reveals, Stieler painted his portrait before 1819. It is possibly connected to the commission by king Joseph Maximilian I of Bavaria to Stieler to portray Carolina Augusta and Francis I on the occasion of their wedding. Appointed painter of the Bavarian court in 1820, Stieler was the most notable portraitist in Munich in the first half of the 19th century.
