Created: 1777 Material, technology: oil, canvas Size: 122.7 x 93.5 cm Description: Joseph II wears the green uniform of the light cavalry. A knee-length extract of the picture is preserved in Warsaw’s National Museum, as Joseph Hickel’s work after the signature. Stylistic analogies and some identical details in the Pannonhalma picture support the attribution to Hickel; the inscription about the donation dates it to 1777. Born in a family of artists, Hickel enrolled in the Vienna academy in 1756 after attempts at altarpiece painting. He soon turned to portraiture. | |
