Description: After a study tour of Italy, Swedish born Martin van Meytens settled in Vienna in 1730; he became a court painter and professor of the art academy of Vienna. He painted portraits and historical events; it was his job to regularly portray the imperial couple and members of the ruling family and the court. He painted several versions of Maria Theresa and her husband Francis of Lorrain. Few of the portraits attributed to him were indeed by his hand, the prototypes being severally copied in the master’s workshop with the help of pupils and assistants.
