Portrait of Maria Theresa

Created: 1753

Material, technology: parchment (mounted on plywood), tempera, gold paint

Size: 28.2 x 22.2 cm

Description: Kneeling figure of Maria Theresa with the Holy Roman crown, the crown of the Hungarian kingdom and that of the Habsburg archdukes. In front of her the imperial eagle joins in his beak the empress’ coat of arms and a parchment reaching down long. The sheet shows the date 1753, the ruler’s motto: justitia et clementia and her signature, all in her hand. In the background the fight of Gideon with the Midianites is seen. Biblical quotations are used as captions to the story. The martial scene indicates the Habsburg war of succession from which Maria Theresa arose with her throne strengthened. It is also confirmed by the gesture of the queen’s hand pointing at the crowns in front of her.
