Description: The picture is probably a character study called tronie in 17th c. Netherlands. This peculiar "Rembradtian" picture type had practitioners in the 18th-19th centuries as well, such as Balthasar Denner, Ch. W. E. Dietrich and J. G. Edlinger. The painters of these works in Dutch style often combined the oldmen figures of Rembrandt with the minute execution of the Leiden school hallmarked by the name of Gerard Dou. This duality characterizes this picture as well.
