Portrait of a woman

Material, technology: oil, wood

Size: 51 x 40 cm

Description: Traditionally attributed to Denner, the male and female portraits were certainly not his creations as the rendering is less powerful, the execution is cruder. The painter must be among the Central European followers of Denners, presumably in Vienna. We have here the peculiar blend of portrait and genre. The stress is on character, the conveying of age and features sometimes bordering on caricature, with minute care devoted to wrinkles, hairs as the main vehicle of convincing naturalism.
