Description: The iconographic precedents to this seascape of sailboats tossed on rough seas go back to 16th c. Old and New Testament scenes in which ships and marine storms as traditional motifs have accentuated roles. As the commentaries in that-time books of emblems prove, these highly dramatic scenes charged with great emotions were associated with a variety of meanings.
