Birds in the next

Material, technology: oil, canvas

Size: 34 x 30 cm

Description: Franz Rösel von Rosenhof of Nuremberg worked much for Viennese clients including prince Karl Eusebius Lichtenstein, mostly doing animal still-lives with insects, reptiles, birds, hares. Little is known of his career or lifework. He was chiefly influenced by Netherlandish still-life and animal painters. The theme of this picture, the gaping fledglings in a nest amidst plants, is rare and must have had allegorical implications in compliance with the period’s practice. It possibly alludes to the protection of the nest, the hearth, and the dangers lurking in the world.
