Siege of a town

Material, technology: oil, canvas

Size: 38 x 51 cm

Description: In the gallery’s old inventory, this and the next battle scenes are attributed to Bourguignon. Here, as with 17th-18th c. battle-pieces in general, the attribution is uncertain. Both paintings belong to the type in which reference to a historical event, the situation evoking reality, plays an important role. This type of representation combining historical documentation with genre scene was popular in engravings and diminished forms, as well as in oil paintings.
