Pipe smokers

Material, technology: oil, wood

Size: 31.5 x 24 cm

Description: Two men smoke pipes and drink by the table in the foreground of a twilit room. The theme was very popular in 17th century Flemish painting. Earlier the picture was attributed to Jacob Toorenvliet (1640-1719); however, it does not resemble the figures of the master belonging to the group of refined Leiden painters. Similarly to several Dutch painters of the 17th century, Toorenvliet’s name also became a generic term. The picture is by an 18th century follower of the master.
