Harvest feast ("Brussels wake")

Created: Antwerp 1650-60

Material, technology: oil, canvas

Size: 61 x 87 cm

Description: Teniers warned his fellows of the consequences of debouchery by visualizing well-known sayings and proverbs. Nearly every picture of his about festive events includes the figure of the piper, and it also appears as a theme in its own right on account of its complex moralistic implications. For his contemporaries the piper personified loose and riotous life. In this context, the man slicing ham and his companion raising his glass symbolize intemperance.
