Created: first half of 18th century Material, technology: wood, tempera Size: 76.7 x 54 cm Description: The Old Slavic inscription on the frame identifies the martyr: Christ’s saint martyr Paraskoveia. The thick brushstrokes and narrow colour spectrum reveal an untrained primitive painter. The cultus of one of the most popular female saints in the Carpathian area emerged from the fusion of several saints of the same name in the 16th c. The dating of the icon is supported by the paleography of the inscription and the pattern of the background. |
