Entry into Jerusalem

Created: end of 18th century

Material, technology: wood, tempera, gilding

Size: 36 x 33 cm

Description: Christ gives blessing seated on a donkey, followed by the apostles, in front of them a crowd of people by a semicircular arch with branches of pussywillow. It is a popular rendering of a traditional iconographic type. Execution is delimited by defects in training. The sky in the background is gold-plated adorned with chased flowers and tendrils. The Romanian inscription in Cyrillic script on the reverse determines the icon’s place in the iconostasis: 3 PALM SUNDAY (3rd of Christ’s feasts in the Tier of Feasts). The frame is a rococo gilt and painted cartouche with acanthus leaves.
