Apostles Peter and Paul, St Sava the Serbian and the monk Simeon Salus

Created: first half of 18th century

Material, technology: wood, tempera

Size: 28 x 22.5 cm

Description: The saints turn towards Emmanuel Christ giving blessing from the clouds. They are named in the border: Miraculous St Sava, archbishop of the Serbs, the Apostle St Peter, IC XC, Miraculous Simeon Salus. The stylistic characteristics - details of the bodies, drapery and background as well as the spectrum of colours - tie the picture to a Central Russian workshop. The revival of the 14th century iconography of the two Serbian saints in early 18th c. was a corollary to the strengthening idea of Imperium Illyricum and the Serbian separatist movements, also penetrating into Russia supporting pan-Slavism.
