Beneath them the prostrate figures of St John the Divine and St Simeon the New Theologian as revealed by the appliqué halos. Except for the figures and the throne, the surface is covered by chiselled metal adorned with flowers and tendrils. Christ’s figure is of a rarely imitated type originating in Novgorod in the 12th century. The style ties the icon to a North Russian workshop. |
