St Catherine of Alexandria

Created: early 19th century

Material, technology: copperplate, oil

Size: 27.5 x 22.5 cm

Description: Since the Middle Ages St Catherine has been one of the most popular figures of christian art. She is depicted in the fore of a hilly landscape here. Her antique hairstyle is adorned by a strip of beads. She wears a gathered grey cloak above her red dress. She holds one of her attributes, the sword in her right with a gentle gesture. A small part of the wheel is seen in the bottom right corner. The somewhat dry but correct painting style is close to the Neo-classicist approach of Nazarene art in the early 19th century.
