Solomon and the Queen of Sheba

Material, technology: oil, canvas

Size: 90 x 69.5 cm

Description: The master of "Solomon and the Queen of Sheba" must be found in Germany; the composition, the figures and facial types primarily suggest Johann Georg Trautmann, who worked in Frankfurt. The luxurious interiors with columns and vaults, the amply floating draperies allude to Italian inspiration, possibly of Venetian painting, and emanate the spirit of German rococo. Court painter to the prince-elector of Pflaz, Trautmann was among the most popular painters of Frankfurt. Even Goethe gave an account of his work in his recollections Dichtung und Wahrheit.
