Created: c. 1686 Material, technology: oil, canvas Size: 70 x 52 cm Description: Probably the oldest picture in Pannonhalma today, Mór Czinár, the learned guardian of the abbey’s collection wrote in 1855 about the one-time altarpiece of the cathedral’s crypt in Chronica Collectionum beginning with 1847. The winged figure of St Michael stands in uncertain counterpoise in the foreground of the ideal landscape crowed with a church. The yellow boots and moustached face tame the archangel with the fiery sword to fit the Hungarian scenery. | |
