Material, technology: oil, canvas Size: 53 x 37 cm Description: The Old Testament scene described in the 4th book of Moses (21,6-9) - the story of the serpent of brass symbolizing the survival for the Jews wandering in the desert - is a prototype of redemption in christian painting. Originally, it may have been the pair of a "Christ on the Cross". Kremser Schmidt represented the scene in a similar manner in his larger painting in the Benedictine abbey of Göttweig. The format of this picture also suggests its use in a monastic environment. | |
