Created: before 1774 Material, technology: copper engraving Size: 51.2 x 70.2 cm Description: The focus of the composition is St Stephen in an open space under a rococo canopy receiving the priests and monks before him and giving them gift-deeds. Behind him is the archbishop Astrik, the first abbot of Pannonhalma, who brought the Hungarian crown from Rome. In the background is a riverside landscape with a tall castle. The painter intended to show Esztergom rather than the country’s future capital, Buda. Two allegorical scenes are set in contrast to one another: behind the canopy an idol is being shattered, while in front the symbol of the new religion, the cross radiating light, is being erected. | |
