Material, technology: tempera, walnut wood Size: 55.5 x 43 cm Description: The picture is a copy of the painting preserved in the sanctuary of Rome’s Santa Maria del Popolo, which was allegedly painted by St Luke but actually originated in the 13th century. Though retaining the model’s composition, the picture deviates from it in detail. The simultaneous presence of archaic and modern elements was characteristic of the style of the leading Roman quattrocento master, Antoniazzo Romano. Romano and his populous workshop painted Madonnas of their own invention as well which became worshipped icons. | |
