Material, technology: tempera, poplar Size: with frame: 101 x 52.5 cm, picture surface: 79 x 39.5 cm Description: Florentine Niccolò di Pietro Gerini’s early work of around 1370. Gerini was one of Florence’s busiest artists in the last quarter of the 14th and early 15th century, executing several frescoes as well. Avoiding high-flying drama, he won the sympathy of the public by his prosaic presentations. The body, especially the Virgin’s and the Child’s heads are moulded with great plasticity, but instead of the throne suggesting spatiality, a carpet with intricate pattern is stretched flat as the background. | |
