Material, technology: oil, canvas mounted on wood Size: 72 x 49 cm Description: The facial features of the Father and Christ, and the peculiarly foreshortened escorting angels can be seen in several of the Sopron painter’s works. The relatively small size tells us it was the upper part of an altarpiece, or an altar ornament in a private chapel. The theme - Imago Pietatis, or the Man of Sorrows in the Father’s lap with the dove of the Holy Spirit and lamenting angels - is not infrequent in 18th century Central European painting, including Maulbertsch and Kremser-Schmidt. The Holy Trinity in Pannonhalma may be connected to Dorfmeister’s now lost altarpiece painted in 1786 in Pannonhalma, or to the rendering of the "Resurrection". | |
