Created: Roman Material, technology: limestone Size: entire h: 44 cm, plinth h: 20-22 cm, w: 44 x 46 cm, base h: 22 cm, w: 29 x 30 cm. depth of tdowel hole: 3,5-4 cm,w: 14,5 x 15 cm Description: The cross-section of this carelessly carved pier base is square. The base, shaped like an irregular truncated pyramid (one side is more steep than the others) rests on a four-sided prismatic plinth. A dowel hole designed to accept the lower dowel of the square, 1 x 1 foot wooden pier was gouged out in the centre of the top layer of the base. Similar bases are known from Roman times from more simple, mainly military structures (e.g. the late Roman military objects of Nógrádverőce and Szob on the left bank of the Danube.) | |
