Material, technology: oil, canvas Size: 65 x 47.5 cm Description: The Golgotha made in Sopron in 1774 and signed by István Schaller is a harmonious late baroque work of quality. It displays the influences of the Austrian baroque masters, first of all Martino Altomonte (1657-1745), but its kinship with the Sopron colleague István Dorfmeister’s work is also unmistakable. Christ on the Cross was a frequent theme in the 18th century, but most often it is shown with the Virgin, Magdalene and other mourners, or alone; it is rarer to have only Mary Magdalene kneeling by the cross, in a gesture of mourning and repentance. |  |
