Fragment of a Corinthian base

Created: Roman

Material, technology: marble

Size: h: 18 cm, width of plinth: 44,5 cm

Description: This fragment (almost half) is from a base from a Corinthian column. Concave and convex elements taper upwards connecting the plinth to the shaft of the column. Above the square plinth a narrow groove runs in a circle completely around the base. Above that is the larger torus, followed by a fillet-half-groove-fillet, then a convex half fillet, the scotia, and finally a smaller torus. In the centre of the upper layer is an approximately 4-cm-deep, 6-cm-in-diameter dowel hole designed to fix the shaft to the base.
