Created: Roman Material, technology: marble Size: h: 20 cm, w: 19 cm Description: This fragment (a corner from a capital) represents a modified, more ornate Roman version of the more simple Ionic column from Asia minor. The unadorned neck is topped with an annulet and above that a row of astragals. Above that is the echinus with protruding egg and dart decoration leading to the abacus, made up of four curved sides typical of Corinthian capitals. A wave runs around the sides of the abacus. Acanthus leaves fill the space between the abacus and the egg-and-dart ornament and spiral at the corners into a volute. Where the volute and the abacus meet originally a sprouting leaf decoration appeared (only a stub remains). This relatively large capital adorned the façade of a representative Roman building. | |
