Created: 1st century AD ? Material, technology: marble Size: h: 24,5 cm, w: 21, 5 cm Description: This antefixum is decorated with a bunch of acanthus leaves on the front and originally decorated the eaves on the long side of a building. behind the front a projecture was formed. An antefixum was part of the roof structure on the long sides of buildings. The roof was covered with flat bricks (tegula), while the joining rims were covered with a ridge-tile (imbrex). The antefixum was placed on the end of the rafter, below the lowest ridge-tile. The projecture in the back - also found in this piece - was used to attach it to the rafter. In the present case, the high rank of the building could explain the use of marble antefixum. |
