Fragment of cancellum, with detail of earlier inscription

Created: 4th-5th century AD?

Material, technology: marble

Size: h: 41, 5 cm, l: 38 cm, w: 3,5 cm

Description: This was part of a parapet from the upper walkway of a several-storeyed building or a part of the sanctuary in a building of worship, located between piers and covered. The lower left edge is intact, while the upper edges are cut and the right side is broken. The parapet originally consisted of at least two slabs placed on top of one another, as the cut upper surface suggests. The decorations, which have been cut through, continued on the upper layer. The surface was decorated with scale-work constructed from semicircles. The areas between the semicircles were carved out. The original design drawn with a steel compass can still be seen. The stone slab used for the parapet had originally been a gravestone. The beginning of the last line of the inscription, carved in rustic majuscule letters can still be seen on the upper part of the slab.
