Fragment of a building inscription

Created: 253 AD

Material, technology: limestone

Size: h: 58, 5 cm, l: 50 cm

Description: This building inscription was originally carved on a slab six times larger than the present fragment. The large slab was probably cut up into pieces during the medieval construction of the abbey, and was brought there from the ruins of Szőny, or ancient Brigetio. This details comes from the centre of the lower part. So far we can only establish that the inscription was connected with events of the year 252-253, and the incursion of barbarians living on the left bank of the Danube. Secundus, mentioned in the inscription, had built some larger structure - a temple or a triumphal arch - at this time, on his own expense.
