Visitation

Material, technology: oil, canvas

Size: 92x 48.5 cm

Description: The sketch was made to Maulbertsch’s last major work in Hungary, the decoration of Szombathely cathedral. The bishop of the diocese, János Szily contracted Maulbertsch to paint the banquet hall of the episcopal residence in 1782, and wanted to engage him for the paintings in the cathedral designed by Menyhért Hefele. The altarpieces were prepared from 1791, the ceiling frescoes sketched from 1794 and painted after Maulbertsch’s death in 1796. As was customary, Maulbertsch made sketches in compliance with the client’s requirements and sent them to the bishop for approval. Such a preliminary sketch is the painting preserved in the gallery of the arch abbacy of Pannonhalma. It largely differs from the altarpiece on the high altar of Szombathely cathedral painted in 1792 and badly damaged in World War II.
