Fragment of a basin with vine decoration

Created: ca 1137

Material, technology: limestone

Size: 28.5 x 21.5 x 22.5 cm

Description: The top of this corner fragment of a small basin is angular, while the lower part tapers down in a curve. The inside has been hollowed out. One side is adorned with a fragmented flat relief work depicting two animals and loosely braided three-veined strands forming a net over them. The other side is undecorated, while the rim of the basin remains intact. It was presumably made for use in a church, its size suggesting it functioned as a font. Analogous ornamentation in Hungary can be found among the mid-12th-century carvings from the provostship of Óbuda and the Benedictine monastery of Somogyvár. The carving at Pannonhalma was probably made at the time the monastery’s renovation was completed in 1137. This piece is thus in all likelihood the earliest dated representative of this form and style of ornamentation in Hungarian art.
