Fragment of the base of a column

Created: ca 1100-1200

Material, technology: sandstone

Size: 19.5 x 25.5 x 17 cm

Description: This carved column, broken in the centre, was probably unfinished. Thus the articulation of the base can not be relied on for accurate dating. The corner bulbs, as far as we can determine, appear to have first come into use in Hungary around 1100-1110 in the church crypt in Dömös. This use of corner bulbs, however, also appeared on simpler structures at the beginning of the 13th century.
