Fragments of a compound pier and engaged columns

Created: ca 1220

Material, technology: limetsone

Size: a.: h.: 24.5 cm

Description: These are fragments of uniformly articulated elements of a vaulting support system. Two (a, b) are fragments from a free-standing pier with a cross-shaped cross-section, while the others (c-e) are from engaged shafts. The compound pier consisted of a square core with rounded corners and cylindrical three-quarter shafts protruding from the central column on each side. The capital (a) is adorned with figures and foliage and traces of paint are detectable on its free surface. The fragments originally belonged to the structural support system of the lower level of the church’s 13th-century west sanctuary.
