Base of a double column

Created: 1220-1230

Material, technology: limestone

Size: h.: 13.5 cm

Description: This base belonged to the series of double columns which divided the windows opening on to the garden in the 13th-century part of the cloister. The block of the monastery and cloister may have been that part of the abbey that was completed after the church’s consecration in 1224 and about which Abbot Urias said in 1226, "satis proficiens" (PRT, I, 681). We know of altogether eighteen stones or fragments from the arches of the wall openings, seven double column bases (of two types) and fragments of numerous red marble columns shafts. Several of them were already mentioned around 1900 (PRT I. 489-490), and many more were found during the excavations of 1961/62 in the fifteenth-century walls of the cloisters.
