Fragment of the tombstone of Máté Tolnai, Archabbot of Pannonhalma

Created: ca 1515

Material, technology: red marble

Size: h.: 34 cm, l.: 100 cm, w.: 11 cm

Description: This fragment of a figural tombstone consists of two pieces glued together. The lower edge of a prelate’s dalmatic can be recognised with the vertical folds of the alb underneath on the stone’s roughly carved surface. Flatly carved floral ornamentation on a granular base adorns the columna of the dalmatic. The portions of the tombstone left intact after it was recarved into a stair provide enough information to accurately date it and determine its type. In the early 18th-century the tombstone of Máté Tolnai - according to Bonifác Lancsics - was located in the chapel of St Benedict.
