Description: In the earlier records of the Pannonhalma gallery it was named as Adam Elsheimer’s work, though it can hardly be associated with the noted 17th c. German master. All that reminds one of the pioneer of German landscape painting is the mysterious atmosphere of the scenery and the dense grouping of the figures clad in oriental attire. The closest kins are the painters of the period active in Austria. The New Testament scene - St John the Baptist christening Jesus in the Jordan - was often rendered similarly, placing the stress on the beauties of the landscape and the almost bizarre rendering of the kaleidoscopical attendance.
