Created: 1686

Material, technology: copper etching and engraving, water-colour

Size: 9.6 x 24.4 cm

Description: During the Ottoman wars several collections of engravings were published in Western Europe, including representations of Hungarian frontier castles. G. Bouttats’s engraving shows a water mill and a battle scene between the Ottomans and the Christians in the foreground, with the monastery, fortifications and the village in the background looking north-west. Because the engraving was made three years after the troops of Kara Mustafa, heading toward Vienna, undermined and destroyed the fortifications of the monastery, the print was made from an earlier representation of 1626.
