Created: second half of 18th century Material, technology: oil, canvas Size: 81.5 x 51 cm Description: The model of this composition, and that of its pair, must be searched among Rembrandt’s pictures or in his circle. The figures, facial types and brushwork resemble closest the works of Ch. W. E. Dietrich (1712-1774), the painter of the Saxon court. Dietrich’s pictures on Biblical themes, the "Lamentation" in Berlin and the "Descent from the cross" in the gallery of Dresden, as well as his copper etching of the same theme but in a different composition made in 1742 all point to stylistic and structural relationship, most probably to the adoption of an engraving as the model. | |
