Seal of Abbot Stephen (1380-1398)

Created: ca 1380

Material, technology: wax seal

Size: 60 x 33 mm

Description: The half-figure of St Martin is depicted under a canopy. Below is the figure of Abbot Stephen in a three-lobed niche turning to the right. Beading encloses the legend: S(IGILLUM) STE(PHANI) ABBATI(S) S(ANCTI) MARTINI. Stephen is the last of the abbots of Pannonhalma who used a distinctive pontifical seal. On the seals of his successors in place of a patron saint or the owner of the seal a heraldic device was used - demonstrating the influence of the secular use of heraldic representations.
