Fragment of the seal of Abbot Nicholas

Created: ca 1300 -ca 1319

Material, technology: plaster copy

Size: 45 x 45 mm

Description: This fragment is probably a cast of part of a signet (tiparium) broken in two (the upper two-thirds). The crooked scratches on the surface of the copy suggest the seal was damaged. Abbot Nicholas’s seal follows the style of 13th-century Hungarian seals of archabbots in which the owner of the seal is depicted in appropriate attire and framed by the legend.
