Seal of the Convent of Pannonhalma

Created: before 1258

Description: Associated with the monastic government of Abbot Urias, the seal was applied mainly to documents of certification. The inscription reads: S(igillum) CAPITULI S(ancti) MARTINI DE SACRO MONTE PANNONIE. The central figure is St Martin in pontificals. The two figures on either side refer to the episode in St Martin’s life in which he visits the imperial court and partakes in a banquet. Out of respect he is given the drinking vessel first. He in turn gives it not to the emperor but to a priest of common rank who belonged to his entourage.
