Liber Ruber - "The Red Book"

Created: ca 1240

Description: Abbot Urias (1207-1242) had the sixty main deeds (sixty-seven with the repetition of transcripts) specifying the rights of the monastery collected into a single volume. Most also survive in the original, but some only in this copy. Adorned with initials in red and blue ink, written in charter script, and also employing graphic symbols, the codex is the earliest Hungarian collection of copied documents (chartularium) and a relic of significance in this genre anywhere in Europe.
