The renewed seal of authentication

Created: 1723

Material, technology: cast, engraved silver with iron handle

Size: diam.: 61 mm

Description: The Ottoman wars put an end to the role of the abbey of Pannonhalma from the 1250s as a place of authentication. Upon Benedek Sajghó’s urging, the Diet ruled in 1723 that the abbey should have a new seal made modelled after the old one and the archabbot should appoint officials to serve in the authentication office. The representation on the seal indeed deviates only in minor detail from its 13th-century prototype. The legend is the same: + S. CAPITULI S. MARTINI DE SACRO MONTE PANNONIAE O.S.B.
