Seal of Abbot Ladislas Czudar (1362-1372)

Created: ca 1362

Material, technology: wax seal broken off

Size: 63 x 40 mm

Description: St Martin is depicted standing in a niche covered with a canopy. Below it is a small figure of the seal’s owner in prayer surrounded by heraldic shields, which show a winged figure (angel?) turning to the right. The legend reads: S(IGILLUM) LADIZLAI ABB(AT)IS [MONASTERII SANCTI M]ARTINI S(A)C(R)E MONTIS PANNON(IE). The 18th-century reproduction of the seal in its already fragmented state is a relic of the history of education also. It bears witness to the late-18th-century use of visual aids in the teaching of Hungarian history at the university level in Buda.
