Title-page of the Pannonhalma Breviary

Created: 1506

Description: Monastic reform was introduced by the former imperial notary, Máté Tolnai, who became abbot of Pannonhalma in 1500. The most important aim of the reform was to renew and standardise monastic life and liturgical order. Printed at Lucantonio Giunta’s press in Venice at the expense of János Pap, a book dealer from Buda, this small breviary of over 1000 pages was to aid in bringing about this reform in all the Benedictine monasteries in "the entire kingdom of Hungary." This edition relied on the liturgical customs of the Benedictines of Melk. Thirteen years later, in 1519, a new edition was necessary.
