Vestments of St Benedict

Created: Hungarian, 16th and 18th century

Material, technology: silk cloth with embroidered cross

Size: chasuble: 69 x 108 cm

Description: The chasuble is trimmed with braiding woven with metallic strands. It is lined with cotton-linen stiffened with glue. The front is violin-shaped, while the back is adorned with an appliqué embroidered cross decorated with Renaissance foliage. In the centre is a round medallion with the embroidered image of St Benedict. The embroidery was applied to a new base cloth of off-white silk damask patterned with a small geometric design. On the exterior there is also silk damask woven with natural-coloured, silk fibres and metallic strands.

The cross is unusually long with raised embroidery using metallic strands on linen. The silver gilt strands interwoven with silk are stitched to the base with natural-coloured silk yarn according to a predetermined pattern. They were either stitched directly onto the linen in pairs or were attached in groups of fours to a cord, which was sewn to the fabric. Silk was sewn along the contour lines and then covered with eastern stitching of dark red silk yarn. It was originally thought that gobelin-style embroidery was used for the St Benedict medallion, but closer examination has revealed that the embroidery is or nué. The base fabric of the dalmatica was lengthened with three different kinds of material. The design of the embroidery is identical to that of the chasuble, but the motifs are proportionally smaller. The silk damask lining was at one time red, but is now faded with spots. The 1.5 cm outer trimming is made of woven metallic strands.
