Material, technology: oil, canvas Size: 155 x 120 cm Description: The one-time curator of the Pannonhalma picture collection, Viktor Récsey attributed the work to David Teniers the younger. The authentic signature, however, supports the authorship of the older Teniers, whose work was overshadowed by his son’s talent for centuries. He learnt painting in his brother Juliaan Teniers’ workshop and took further training with his friend Adam Elsheimer of Frankfurt (1578-1610) in Rome, parallel with Rubens. He earned a name as a painter of Biblical and mythological scenes, but he also painted large religious pictures. It was Andor Pigler who first suggested that he was the author, accepting the inscription with the date 1632 as authentic. | |
