Created: 1759 Material, technology: gilded and painted limewood Size: h.: 123 cm Description: As a 13th century Cistercian nun, St Gertrude developed the mysticism of the sacred heart of Jesus. The statue is from the church of Bakonybél the high altar of which was made by a sculptor and woodcarver of Pápa in 1758. The altarpictures of the high altar, as well as the side altars of the Immaculate Virgin and St Benedict, were also painted by a Pápa artist, Ignác Pollinger in 1759. The church and the altars were renovated in 1878, and maybe some statues were removed then. St Gertrude was probably an accompanying saint on the Virgin’s altar. The 19th century gilding, the roughly repainted face and replaced hands largely reduce the work’s original quality. | |
