Created: mid-18th century Material, technology: painted and gilt limewood Size: h.: 56 cm Description: Christ’s gilded cross like a tree trunk grows out of a skull placed on two crumbling bones. The serpent, the emblem of sin, creeps out of the skull. The tree growing from the skull has a dual meaning, standing for Adam, the first man, and for the Golgotha. It can be interpreted also as triumph over death. The modelling of Christ’s body carries similarly good qualities to the Calvary from Győr. However, the two are stylistically not related. | |
